When we improve development businesses our focus is on understanding what the value flow looks like – from the customer’s requirements through to delivery of the business value. We use logistic methods in which we remove bottlenecks in the flow, reducing the amount of work in progress and creating fixed delivery points to increase productivity. Measurements made by Forrester Research have shown that these methods have led to 30% improvements in shortened lead times and reduced costs.
The approach we use to initiate continuous improvement is also based on Lean and Agile principles. Initially, we must understand our client’s situation and goals and, based on this, start to attack the right things in the right order. Quite simply, we create a Change Backlog-like Scrum. We have a management team that owns this backlog and we make sure we get frequent and constant deliveries of new habits and behaviors.
Small steps, high visibility and strong commitment are the cornerstones. We are, of course, experts in the use of all the “hard” methods and tools of Lean and Agile, because we practice them in our own software development.
