During the spring, our office in Stockholm had the privilege of having four excellent IT students on site. The girls are in their second year of the engineering program specializing in computer science at KTH (Kungliga Tekniska Högskolan). During the spring semester, they had a course in software development that was to be placed at a company. The project allows the students to apply all the new knowledge they have learned during the academic year, and it is extra fun that they chose Softhouse!
During the project, they developed a product that will act as an internal tool to provide project managers with an overview of all the company’s projects. Project managers can configure, edit, delete, and search for projects through the web application. The system’s goal is to provide project managers with essential information about upcoming, ongoing, and completed projects.
What has been challenging has been learning about the new technologies that we used, such as React.js, Spring Boot, Ubuntu server, etc. We have encountered challenges but received plenty of help and support from the team at Softhouse to get through them. Despite that, the new techniques have been among the most fun things we got to delve into during the project. It has been super fun and interesting to learn so much new things in such a short time. In addition, we have had to apply our knowledge in a way that is based on reality, say the girls.
They have not previously had the opportunity to work with product owners and an entire team in the same way as they have during their time at Softhouse. They all agree that it has been fun and educational as a student to take part in an actual project at a company. They also find it rewarding to get a taste of the agile way of working in real working life.
Before the project, they were tasked with finding a company that they think seems interesting and where there are opportunities to carry out this type of project.
We received tips about Softhouse via a contact. We then looked up the company and thought it sounded suitable for our project and was within our interest. We sent over the information about our project and who we are, and they said the interest was mutual.
The girls have always had an interest in IT and when it came time for them to choose education, they were sure at an early stage what they wanted to study in.
We chose an IT education because IT characterizes society and will be relevant in the future. We have family members and acquaintances who work in IT who have told us that the industry has many career opportunities. The education is broad enough for all of us to find something that interests us. After this project, some of us have realized that frontend or backend is something we can work with in the future, they conclude.
