Spectra Mark + Softhouse – Automating Quantity Takeoffs from Drawings

In construction planning, architectural drawings are essential for estimating scope and cost. Traditionally, this process involves manual interpretation—which is time-consuming and prone to error. To streamline and modernize the workflow, Spectra Mark partnered with Softhouse to explore how AI could automate the extraction of information directly from drawings.

Together, we developed a solution that uses image analysis and edge detection to automatically identify objects and calculate surface areas, significantly reducing manual effort and increasing the accuracy of cost estimations.

What we did

  • Built an AI model that detects, classifies, and counts elements in drawings

  • Implemented edge detection to calculate areas—essential for quantity takeoffs

  • Automated a key part of the cost estimation process that was previously manual

Business impact

With this solution, Spectra Mark benefits from:

  • Faster, more efficient workflows in early project phases

  • Improved accuracy in material and cost calculations

  • Stronger data foundations for decision-making in tenders and planning

This case demonstrates how AI can add real value to even the most traditional parts of the construction process—transforming blueprints into smart, actionable data.

We code the future – by automating what used to take hours of manual review.

  • AI

AI (Artificial Intelligence) is a broad term for technologies that enable computers to mimic human thinking—such as analyzing information, making decisions, and learning from experience. AI is used in everything from chatbots to advanced industrial automation.

  • Edge Detection

Edge Detection is a technique used in image analysis to identify edges and shapes within an image. By detecting contrasts and contours, the system can recognize objects and calculate areas—making it especially useful for interpreting drawings and automating quantity estimations.

  • Image Analysis

Image Analysis involves using algorithms to interpret and understand information within images. This can include identifying objects, patterns, or anomalies—and is used in everything from industrial quality control to interpreting architectural drawings.

  • Object Recognition

Object Recognition is an AI technique that enables computers to identify and locate specific objects within an image. It’s commonly used to detect symbols, rooms, or components in drawings and other visual materials.
