Spectra Mark + Softhouse – Automating Quantity Takeoffs from Drawings
In construction planning, architectural drawings are essential for estimating scope and cost. Traditionally, this process involves manual interpretation—which is time-consuming and prone to error. To streamline and modernize the workflow, Spectra Mark partnered with Softhouse to explore how AI could automate the extraction of information directly from drawings.
Together, we developed a solution that uses image analysis and edge detection to automatically identify objects and calculate surface areas, significantly reducing manual effort and increasing the accuracy of cost estimations.
What we did
Built an AI model that detects, classifies, and counts elements in drawings
Implemented edge detection to calculate areas—essential for quantity takeoffs
Automated a key part of the cost estimation process that was previously manual
Business impact
With this solution, Spectra Mark benefits from:
Faster, more efficient workflows in early project phases
Improved accuracy in material and cost calculations
Stronger data foundations for decision-making in tenders and planning
This case demonstrates how AI can add real value to even the most traditional parts of the construction process—transforming blueprints into smart, actionable data.
We code the future – by automating what used to take hours of manual review.
